| Don't Need No Stinking Foreign Language Anymore! | Davis '67/Norton '62/Patois | 7/7/99 |
Dave Davis '67...........
Plebes don't take foreign language. Only
language requirements are in English, Economics, Political
Science and History majors. Engineers and Science majors may take
languages as part of the required Humanities electives.
Chuck Norton '67..........
Used to be that Plebe roommates were assigned
according to which language they were to be taking. Is this still
true? Muchas gracias,
Patois '63.......
Yes, it was the fine study of the Russian language that put
together the collection of Schufeldt, Trani, Browne, and
Waugh. Three Napsters and a young Irishman from the
Bronx. According to our sponsor, a Nav prof named
Bruce Toffelmeier, there was also an attempt to balance the rooms
psychologically. Shu (he liked to be called Vance) was one
of the oldest in the Class, and Pete Browne was either the
youngest or damned near. We were
all supposed to somehow merge in the middle. Don't really
recall studying Russian that much together.
I suppose that the great minds thought long and hard before
eliminating the foreign language requirement. I have always
held that as part of a general education curriculum. Just
as algebra and calculus created new ruts for
logical thinking, a struggle with a foreign language linked
neurons and created vocabularies that promoted communication
abilities superior to those who had not.
Oh well. I guess each ship should have at least one Bull
major on board to help with the niceties.
