Dick's description probably discloses why some of us
old Napsters are so
devout in pursuit of "fleet" appointments. In
many cases, it literally gave
us a chance to be a "phoenix" rising from the ashes.
As the third child of eleven in a fine Irish Catholic family from
a
southwest suburb of Chicago, I joined the Navy at 17 to escape
the
preordained path of bluecollardom. My GCT/ARI of 74/55,
that said I'd never
be a pilot (since I never took shop in HS), but could be an
officer, started
me on a path that would change my life.
I want that chance for anyone under similar circumstance.
